Chapter 5 examines the intersections between the evolution of employment regimes and the transformation of teachers’ career trajectories in England and France. It revisits the comparison between market and bureaucratic employment regimes from the perspective of teachers’ career trajectories. A fragmentation of careers is observed in both systems, reflecting in England the development of organizational internal labor markets and in France the dualization of teachers’ careers and the gradual deinstitutionalization of teachers’ employment and professional status. The consequences of these two forms of fragmentation on the development of teaching professionalism are discussed.§
