At a time when transformations in higher education and the professionalization of the doctorate have led to the emergence of new profiles of young researchers, this article aims to explore the hypothesis of a strong segmentation of doctoral experiences. Doctoral satisfaction and mental health are studied on the basis of doctoral students’ living conditions, taking into account the type of thesis funding and proposing six doctoral student profiles. The empirical fieldwork, based on the OVE’s “Conditions de vie des étudiants 2020” survey, has the advantage of a sample of 636 university doctoral students. The profiles of doctoral students appear to be heterogeneous, and in some cases precarious. The results, obtained from logistic regressions, revealed overall disparities between doctoral students concerning their doctoral experiences (general satisfaction with the doctorate and mental health).
