Project type: ANR RITM BFC project
Project title: Verbal interactions in lectures, engagement and success of first-year undergraduates: a study of links
Acronym: INTERACSUP
People involved in the project: Amélie Duguet (IREDU, project coordinator), Sophie Morlaix (IREDU) and Lucie Corbin (LEAD)
Project summary:
In a context where failure rates at university remain high, particularly at the undergraduate level, this project proposes to make an original contribution to work on the determinants of university success. More specifically, it will focus on a contextual factor, namely teachers’ pedagogical practices and, more specifically, verbal interactions between teachers and students during lectures.
The aim of the research is twofold: firstly, to describe and analyze the variety of these interactions, and secondly, to apprehend their differentiated effects on the success of students enrolled in the first year of university. We also consider student engagement, in its various forms (affective, cognitive and behavioral) as a mediating variable in the effect of verbal interactions on student success.
In order to meet the objectives of this research, a mixed methodology is preferred: in situ observations of teacher-student interactions in lectures are supplemented by a questionnaire survey of first-year university students enrolled in a variety of courses.
