This project focuses on the doctoral experience and how doctoral students respond to professional demands. The first objective of this project aims to quantify changes in perceptions of skills during the doctorate using a longitudinal study, identify skills that present difficulties (i.e., “core” skills that would be perceived as being poorly developed), identify factors that can determine the ways in which doctoral students perceive their skills (e.g., complementary experiences, thesis format) The second objective of the project focuses on the links between the perception of skills and the professional experiences of doctors. We are interested in two sets of consequences. A first set concerns the professional aspirations of doctors: a weak perception of skills should lead to lower aspirations, which could notably lead doctors to choose jobs for which they are overqualified. A second set of consequences concerns the reactions of doctors to situations of professional demands (i.e., professional situations that require skills or sustained efforts). In these situations, low perception of competence can generate stress, threat assessments, and poor coping strategies. The project will examine how these principles apply to doctors and how they may actually be impacted by their difficulties in identifying their competences.
